TRIP DESCRIPTION

Slovakia's Tatra Mountains are the highest range in the Carpathians, forming a natural border with Poland and boasting a rich, colourful history. Recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve on both sides, the region remains wild and largely untouched by human influence. Often described as 'just as scenic as the Alps' yet untouched by the crowds, this hidden gem offers around 600km of well-marked trails, making it a true mountain playground. With an excellent hiking infrastructure and a strong commitment to environmental preservation, it's an ideal destination for nature lovers.

We've crafted a walking holiday that lets you soak up the wild beauty, striking mountain panorama, and some of the region's best trails, without the need to conquer the highest peaks! Staying in two scenic locations, the resort village of Štrbske Pleso and the heart of High Tatras National Park, Starý Smokovec, you'll be surrounded by stunning landscapes in this emerging hiking paradise.

Our carefully selected walks take you to scenic mountain lakes, tumbling waterfalls, sun-dappled woodland trails, and the region's oldest mountain hut, all enhanced by Slovakia's authentic charm and warm hospitality.

Extend your stay with extra nights to further explore the nearby town of Poprad or even the fascinating city of Krakow, where we can arrange convenient car transfers to and from your destination. By spending an extra night, you can enjoy Poprad's rejuvenating thermal spas and mountain vistas, while in Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, you'll have ample opportunity to immerse yourself in its rich architectural heritage and visit world class museums.

Day 2: Popradske Lake Walk (11km/6.8mi)

Just a few minutes' walk from your hotel, you'll arrive at the shimmering shores of Štrbske Pleso Lake. The well-marked trail follows the lakeside before leading into a sun-dappled woodland, characteristic of the Tatra region. As you wander through the forest, immersed in the sounds of nature, breath-taking views gradually unfold, revealing majestic mountain peaks. Before long, the cheerful echoes of visitors enjoying Popradske Lake will reach your ears. Take a leisurely stroll around this stunning lake and savour refreshments at the charming lakeside cafe.

A short detour from the lake leads to the Symbolic Cemetery - a solemn yet beautiful memorial honouring those who lost their lives in the High Tatras. Thoughtfully integrated into the natural landscape, this poignant site serves as a reminder of the mountains' power and the respect they command.

Day 3: Skok Waterfall Walk (10km/6.2mi)

Your day begins once more with a peaceful stroll along the shores of Štrbske Pleso Lake as you make your way out of town. Gradually ascending through the woodland, you'll follow a well-marked trail that soon opens up to breath-taking mountain scenery. At the highest point, around 1,800m, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the mountain range, accompanied by the sight of the magnificent Skok Waterfall.

This towering waterfall, visible from Štrbske Pleso, is steeped in legend. It is said to have formed from the tears of a heartbroken girl mourning the loss of her beloved - a poacher who perished here while chasing chamois. A captivating tale and an awe-inspiring natural wonder!

Day 4: Free Day: Rail to Starý Smokovec

Today, you're free to explore more of Štrbske Pleso before moving onto Starý Smokovec. You'll take the Tatra Electric Railway between the two, choosing your preferred time at your leisure, taking your luggage with you (approx. 10mins - €3 per person paid locally).

From Starý Smokovec, we recommend visiting Poprad Town which can be reached in 30mins by rail. Overflowing with natural beauty and steeped in rich cultural heritage, this charming city lies in the heart of the High Tatras, making it a beloved destination for travellers worldwide. Whether you're drawn to history, captivated by nature, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Poprad offers something for everyone.

Heading west from Starý Smokovec, you'll be treated to breath-taking mountain views as you follow a well-marked trail lined with vibrant wildflowers. Walking in the shadow of Slavkovský štit, one of Slovakia's highest peaks at 2,452m, you'll eventually reach the renowned Sliezsky Dom mountain hotel. Here, on the shores of Velicke pleso, a stunning crystal-clear lake and the largest in the valley, take a moment to soak in the serene surroundings. If you're lucky, you might even spot the graceful Tatra chamois along the way - an ideal place to pause for lunch.

From the lake, descend along the mountainside to the quaint village of Tatranska Polianka, where you board the Tatra Electric Railway for a scenic 10-minute ride back to Starý Smokovec (approx. €1 per person, payable locally).

Day 6: Oldest Mountain Hut Walk (8km/5.0mi)

Leaving Starý Smokovec behind, you'll gradually ascend out of the village, soon arriving at the Kvantarium art gallery. Before continuing your walk, consider exploring its interactive exhibits (advance online booking recommended; approx. €11pp). From here, follow a well-defined yet rocky trail into the mountains, tracing the course of the Vodopady Studeneho potoka river and its cascading waterfalls - a breath-taking sight and a popular spot for a refreshing dip.

Before long, you'll arrive at Rainerova, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatra Mountains, built in 1863 as a refuge for travellers caught in bad weather. Pause at this charming stone hut to enjoy refreshments and browse its collection of vintage climbing gear and skis. To complete your journey, return to Starý Smokovec along the adjacent trail, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

Day 7: Green Lake Walk (15km/9.3mi)

Zelene Pleso, or 'The Green Lake,' tucked away in the High Tatras, is often regarded as one of the most stunning walks - and with good reason. Walk through a breathtakingly varied landscape, following rocky trails that weave through towering, rugged mountains. As you gradually gain elevation, the scenery becomes even more dramatic, with vast expanses of pine forests unfurling beneath you, their deep green hues contrasting strikingly against the jagged peaks above. The blend of wild, untamed terrain and the tranquil, emerald waters of Green Lake makes this hike a true highlight of the High Tatras.

Unwind on the picturesque shore, taking in the shimmering lake as it reflects the towering mountains - like a painting come to life. Savour a well-earned lunch at the nearby mountain hut, where breath-taking views and the warm camaraderie of fellow hikers enhance the experience of this remarkable journey. Retrace your steps to Starý Smokovec for your last evening in the Tatra Mountains.

Day 8: Depart Slovakia

Bid farewell to this unique mountain range as you return to the airport for your journey home.

Alternatively, extend your Slovakian adventure with additional nights. Consider exploring the charming town of Poprad or venturing a little further to the historic city of Krakow.

REVIEWS

The service was excellent. Andrew Palmer walked me through the booking process, answering my questions, telling me what to expect, and ensuring that I didn't forget to supply any critical information. I particularly appreciated that he arranged to call me, despite the seven hour time difference.
