Santorini is one of the most famous and romantic islands in the world. This unique volcanic island has picture-perfect white and blue houses that stand watch over the vivid, blue Mediterranean and its visiting cruise ships. To see the island's history for yourself, check out the archaeological site of Akrotiri, a city buried by a volcanic eruption in 1,500BC. Wander down to the black beaches of Kamari, formed by the volcanic materials which covered the island.
The island of Evia (also known as Euboea) is the second-largest Greek Island after Crete and is connected to the mainland by a small land bridge. By road, it is just over two hours' drive from Athens, meaning it's often convenient to combine the two into the same trip. The beauty of Evia is that it is not all that touristy, despite its breathtaking walks and historical sites.
Walk along the island's ancient corridor that leads to a remote, hidden beach, climb up Mount Ohi, and see the Roman quarries where green and white marble was mined. Meet the locals in the village of Lycorema and, of course, spend some time unwinding on the beach.
The Pelion Peninsula is another of Greece's hidden gems, and the area in which the mythology of the centaurs stems from. Walk along white sandy beaches and stop for picnics and a dip in the water. Greece is great country for walking holidays. Much of the country is mountainous, so it's well-suited if you like the challenge of a climb. Take extra care when walking around in the main cities and towns though. It's also a good idea to take the precaution of bringing good-quality walking shoes, as some of the mountain trails and roads can be slippery due to their sheer age. Many of them date back to Biblical times!

Crete is a large island with very few roads, meaning that many of the locals commute by boat, so you can explore a network of quiet, ancient coastal paths to your heart's content. The route wends its way through hidden coves and beaches, and the glistening limestone of the White Mountains in the west of the island. Discover historical sites such as the mosaic floor of the now-destroyed Temple of Asklepios and the Byzantine chapel of St Pavlos, which marks the spot where St Paul is said to have landed in Crete.

You're more likely to experience rain in autumn and winter, but this doesn't mean you won't have bright, sunny days. In short, both raincoats and sunglasses are relevant items to pack.
Much of this is down to personal preference. Of course, many travellers love Greece for its summer sunshine and the swimming opportunities. But if you prefer to walk when the temperatures are lower, consider coming during off-peak, colder months, when many of the days are still likely to be bright and sunny. Another advantage is that Greece is less crowded during those quieter months of October through March.
