TRIP DESCRIPTION

Follow 'La Velodyssee', the French part of the Atlantic Coast Route - Eurovelo 1. This cycle route along the Atlantic to the Basque Coast is an invigorating journey, showcasing the region's remarkable coastal beauty.

Starting from the lively port of La Rochelle, our route takes you through charming towns like Royan, with its Belle Epoque villas, to the renowned wine region of Bordeaux, known for its rolling vineyards and rich cultural history. Along the way, you will encounter an ever-changing kaleidoscope of landscapes. The Atlantic Ocean serving as a constant, majestic backdrop, while vibrant towns and local culture make each stop unique.

The route is a perfect balance of natural beauty and cultural exploration, offering you the freedom to explore at your own pace. You can ride along miles of fine sandy beaches with legendary waves, take in the fragrance of the pine forests, and cycle through picturesque vineyards.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Arrival in La Rochelle

A fortified old port, recognisable by its famous medieval towers, bell towers, cloisters and a majestic town hall. La Rochelle's heritage is impressive, but that doesn't mean the atmosphere is any less relaxed. Seafood restaurants and terraces with views give the town a permanent holiday feel.

Day 6: Mortagne sur Gironde - Blaye (62km/38.5mi)

The Blaye - Cote de Bordeaux appellation offers both white and reds wines. Young red wine aromas are strong and fruity, with musk and spice notes developing with age, whereas the dry whites are intense and powerful, with notes of boxwood and citrus (lemon, grapefruit).

Day 7: Blaye - Bordeaux (55km/34.2mi)

Take a deep breath of crisp sea air. Start this ride by crossing the Gironde river by boat to reach Lamarque and its famous Medoc vineyards and chateaux wine cellars. Over on the other side, you will discover the jewel in the crown of the Verrou Vauban (the Vauban defensive system): Fort Medoc. Next, it's time to explore the Bordeaux Wine Route in Medoc as you pass through the world-renowned Margaux area. The route continues along small roads which pass through the Medoc's vineyards, small hedged fields and moorland as far as Bordeaux.
