Discover the timeless beauty of the Dalmatian Coast on this self-guided walking holiday, where you'll explore three of Croatia's most captivating locations: Split, Brač, and Hvar. This journey blends gentle coastal walks, rich cultural heritage, and island-hopping across the sparkling Adriatic - perfect for those who love scenic trails, history, and a relaxed pace of travel.
Begin in Split, home to the remarkable UNESCO-listed Diocletian's Palace, a living museum of Roman architecture and vibrant street life. Ferry across to the island of Brač, where you'll walk to Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Adriatic islands, with breathtaking views across the coastline. There's time for a refreshing swim in the clear waters near Bol, or a wander through its charming old town. Continue to Hvar, famous for its Venetian architecture, lavender fields, and traditional stone villages, where quiet walking trails reveal the island's serene beauty.
Croatia's food and wine are a highlight of this holiday. Enjoy fresh Adriatic seafood, slow-cooked peka lamb or octopus, and handmade cheeses served with fragrant local olive oils. Dine in family-run konobas and discover native wines such as Pošip and Grk, or rich reds from Plavac Mali grapes, all best enjoyed as the sun sets over the harbour.
Throughout the trip, there are plenty of opportunities to pause for a swim or relax by the sea after your walks. With each island hop, you'll uncover a new layer of Croatia's charm - from ancient towns to peaceful coastal paths. This is an ideal holiday for mature travellers seeking a mix of culture, gentle adventure, and the unforgettable beauty of Croatia's islands.
The route is mostly along tracks or rural roads; sometimes on paths (some can be rocky due to characteristic limestone). Paths are generally easy to follow and sometimes waymarked and/or signposted however this is variable.
Arrive in the vibrant city of Split, where layers of history and coastal charm create the perfect welcome to Croatia.
If you arrive early, explore the green oasis of Peristyle Square, or climb the Bell Tower of St Domnius for a spectacular first view over the city and harbour. Art lovers may enjoy the nearby Gallery of Fine Arts, home to Croatian works from the 14th century to the present day.
Settle into the rhythm of Dalmatian life with dinner at a local konoba, where you can savour freshly caught fish and regional wines as the sun sets over the waterfront.
