TRIP DESCRIPTION

This 7 night walking holiday leads you on a self-guided adventure along Sicily's stunning eastern coast, taking in some of the island's most precious jewels, from the spectacular Greek theatre of Taormina to the immense Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. You'll also spend four days island hopping between the astonishingly beautiful Aeolian Islands, a string of seven volcanic islets that glimmer like black pearls off Sicily's Mediterranean shoreline. You'll stay two nights on the island of Stromboli, known also as the 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean' for its constant volcanic eruptions and two nights on Lipari, the largest island of the Aeolian Archipelago.

The walks themselves are as varied as the places you'll visit. Highlights include climbing Vulcano's Gran Cratere della Fossa crater to see the fumaroles - vents from which a steady stream of gases and vapours eerily seep out of the ground - and ascending to a wonderful vantage point to witness the intermittent explosions on Stromboli. A day is spent on Mount Etna itself, where you are guided through an impressive volcanic landscape with infinite views over the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

Your hotels vary from an elegant, family run hotel just yards from the Greek theatre in Taormina to a sea front hotel overlooking one of Stromboli's black sand beaches.

Please note that the itinerary on this trip is subject to change in the event of bad weather or an increase in volcanic activity. This will be arranged locally for you by the local agent.

Terrain

This holiday follows mule tracks, stony coastal roads and footpaths through a volcanic landscape of dried lava rock and sand, with frequent, often stony, ascents/descents. Walking boots are essential, and poles strongly recommended.

REVIEWS

We were probably unlucky with ferry/hydrofoil disruption. Overall we decided that the trip involved too much travel time - but we realise that is the nature of the trip. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mrs Hewitt, 1 Oct 2024

Well organised, clear instructions, all the transfers and hotels and hydrofoils as planned.

A Valued Customer, 24 Sep 2024

Good, imaginative package, very well-organised, but I do have some reservations about the amount of travelling on a short trip, and the up-to-date info on one walk.

A Valued Customer, 23 Sep 2024

Our holiday was very well organised, everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful. When there were weather-related issues alternative arrangements were made quickly and we were kept informed of what was happening

Mr Towers, 9 Sep 2024

We really enjoyed our Headwater holiday. All destinations were either fascinating, stunningly beautiful or both! Support on the ground was superb with our agent "going the extra mile" to rearrange logistics in the face of an impending storm. Our guide for Mount Etna was fantastic. The hotels could have been better but this did not spoil our trip!

A Valued Customer, 8 Sep 2024

Excellent guide for the Etna walk. App was very good though we didn’t need it really.

Paul Walker, 8 May 2024

We enjoyed our holiday. It was affected by the weather but your local agents handled the situation very well.

John Bartram, 14 Apr 2024

Our experience of Headwater is very positive, the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We liked that one person, Megan took care of our booking it made our holiday feel Taylor made for us. Many thanks.

Catherine Hill-kelly, 14 Oct 2023

I was very happy with the organisation of the holiday

Peter Costello, 23 Sep 2023

Headwater take care of the work required to produce a complex itinerary so we can relax and enjoy our holiday. We got to see a lot of Sicily in just one week and have returned home with some extraordinary memories. The highlight has to be the guided night hike up Stromboli to witness the volcanic fire show, very humbling.

Heather Patel, 9 Sep 2023

We felt very well looked after by Headwater both before and during our trip to Sicily this Spring. We have travelled with Exodus and Headwater on several guided and self-guided trips over the years, both with and without our family, and for activity holidays they would always be our first choice.
