A walking holiday in the Faroe Islands offers an unforgettable journey through one of the world's most unspoiled landscapes. This remote North Atlantic archipelago boasts dramatic cliffs, rolling green hills, and breath-taking coastal views. Explore rugged trails leading to historic lighthouses, bird-filled cliffs, and panoramic mountain summits. Encounter thousands of puffins on Mykines, hike the stunning fjords of Klaksvik, and stand at the edge of the world on Suduroy. With a mix of privately guided walks and free time to explore charming Torshavn, this adventure blends nature, history, and solitude, making it perfect for those seeking raw beauty and an experience like no other.
From your base in the capital city Torshavn, your private guide will offer local knowledge and expert insights into the Faroes; they'll act as an invaluable asset as you journey across this striking landscape. Sail to Mykines Island where you'll pass the striking Drangarnir sea arch and the basalt cliffs of Tindholmur islet, weather permitting. With no cars and a daily visitor limit, Mykines Island is the westernmost of the Faroes and a haven for bird enthusiasts.
The adventure continues on Suduroy, the southernmost island of the Faroes, reached by a two-hour ferry from Torshavn. Along the way, you'll pass the dramatic islets of Litla Dimun and Stora Dimun. You'll visit Akraberg, the Faroes' southernmost point, where a striking white lighthouse with a red roof stands sentinel over the vast Atlantic Ocean. The remote setting and endless sea views evoke a profound sense of solitude and adventure. The day's journey offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and exploration, leaving visitors with a deep appreciation for Suduroy's rugged beauty.
Hop on a 20-minute ferry to visit the nearby island of Nolsoy. Upon arrival, you'll pass through the 'Gate of Honour,' made from the jawbones of a 25m blue whale caught in 1895. Nolsoy offers spectacular coastal hikes with breath-taking ocean views, culminating in a chance to relax at the island's tiny sandy beach, Malarendi, on a sunny day. This final day encapsulates the spirit of the Faroes - unspoiled nature and fascinating history.
Arrive at Sorvagur airport and transfer to your hotel in Torshavn (approx. 45mins).
Close to the harbour, restaurants, and historical area of Torshavn, our charming hotel here will be your base for the week as you explore the elusive Faroe Islands. Despite its small size, the capital city Torshavn offers an abundance of charm with plenty to discover. With its cobbled alleyways and grassy roofed buildings, you'll feel as though you've been transported back to when the Vikings ruled these striking islands.
Named after the Norse god Thor (the god of thunder), Torshavn has a vibrant historical centre and busy harbourside. Notable attractions include the town hall and Faroese Parliament building located within Vaglid Square, the fresh fish market on Vagsbotnur harbourside, and Torshavn cathedral established in 1788.
You stay at Hotel Djurhuus.
Hotel Djurhuus, Tórshavn
Close to the harbour, restaurants, shops and the historical area of Tórshavn, this comfortable hotel has 50 rooms from standard to superior suite (room upgrades on request). Start your day with a delightful continental breakfast followed by a warming cup of coffee as you enjoy the splendid views of the horizon across to the small island of Nólsoy.
You will be transferred from your hotel to Sorvagur port for your sailing across to Mykines Island (approx. 45mins). The boat journey to Mykines is an experience in itself with beautiful sights en-route. You depart from Sorvagsfjordur fjord, sailing along the Drangarnir sea arch and Tindholmur islet with impressive basalt columns rising to 60m; all weather permitting.
Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 main Faroese Islands and a popular island for viewing the thousands of puffins that call it home. With no more than 250 visitors on the island per day (and only 14 permanent residents!), Mykines retains its remote appeal with spectacular scenery and nature; it's also car free.
Your local private guide will lead you on a walk across the rolling green hills and to the remote lighthouse on the isle of Mykinesholmur. There are approx. 30 species of birds nesting on the island, but no other bird is as popular as the puffin. All along the western part of the island, the ground is completely excavated by their burrows as they nest on the ground and swarm over you - a truly unforgettable sight!
Today you visit the southernmost Faroese Island of Suduroy, sailing approx. 2hrs from Torshavn, passing the stunning islands of Litla Dimun and Stora Dimun en-route.
Docking in Trongisvagsfjorour fjord, outstanding views surround you as your private guide leads you around the island. The panorama from Gluggarnir mountain summit (610m high) are truly epic, as is the west coast of this impressive island. You will cross the famous wooden bridge to reach Rituskor cleft boasting stunning views of the Asmundarstakkur rock formation (only possible to cross with a guide).
You will also visit the most southerly tip of the Faroes called Akraberg, home to a white painted lighthouse with striking red roof. Standing on the tip of this remote island overlooking the vast ocean will be sure to make you feel very thankful to be experiencing this adventure.
Enjoy a free day to explore Torshavn at leisure. We recommend visiting the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands - established in 1989, this collection consists of approx. 2,500 works of art, primarily paintings but also graphics, art installations and sculptures dating back to the 1830's.
One of the most famous hikes in the Faroes is from Klaksvik located on Bordoy Island. Discover breath-taking viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas of majestic fjords and dramatic seascapes, providing a unique perspective on this unspoiled paradise. Accompanied by your private guide, you will delve into the culture and history of the Faroe Islands, hearing untold stories and gaining valuable insights along the way.
Wherever you are in the capital Torshavn, you'll be able to see the beautiful island of Nolsoy. After just a 20min sailing, you'll be greeted by the 'Gate of Honour'. Made from blue whale jawbones, this whale was reported to be 25m long and was caught by the people of Nolsoy in 1895.
With plenty of great hiking options on the island, you'll be met with striking ocean views within unspoiled nature every step you take. On a sunny day, there's a tiny sandy beach called Malarendi that you can take advantage of after your walk!
You may wish to visit Kongaminnid memorial, a basalt obelisk erected in 1882 to commemorate the visit of Danish King Christian IX. Skansin fort is another place of interest with an intriguing history. Here, you can admire exceptional views across the Atlantic to the neighbouring island Nolsoy.
