Mallorca, often celebrated for its sun-drenched beaches and crystal-clear waters, has quietly become a haven for cyclists seeking both scenic beauty and cultural depth. Beyond the bustling resorts lies a quieter, more authentic side of the island, best discovered on two wheels. This relaxed, self-guided cycling route meanders through peaceful coastal stretches and winds into the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic landscapes and charming hilltop villages.
The island's history adds a rich backdrop to any cycling journey. From ancient Roman ruins to medieval monasteries perched high in the hills, Mallorca offers glimpses into a storied past. The winding routes often lead through old olive groves and past traditional stone-walled fincas, with opportunities to stop and explore historical landmarks such as the 13th-century town of Alcudia.
A day in the saddle is perfectly rewarded with the island's vibrant culinary scene. Small, family-run hotels provide not only comfort but a taste of true Mallorquin hospitality. Paired with a glass of local wine-perhaps a red from Binissalem or a crisp white from Pla i Llevant-every meal offers the perfect end to a day exploring Mallorca's hidden gems.
Cycling in Mallorca is an absolute pleasure for several reasons: Its benign weather, the fact that most of the island is relatively flat so there are no great climbs (unless you enter the northern mountains of Tramuntana), and finally the hundreds of wonderful little roads with almost no traffic are ideal for cycling leisurely without a worry in the world, alongside cycle tracks.
In fact, the local government here has recognised the importance of these special roads for new trends in tourism and has developed a network of cycling routes where bikes have priority over cars.
Cycle to the stunning beaches near your hotel, visit the salt production lagoons and see the local flamingo inhabitants, and enjoy a rest by the hotel pool. The owners of the hotel are especially proud of their local homemade cooking and Mallorquin wines they provide.
Following small country lanes you cycle down to the coast before heading north to Algaida. The route passes through almond fields (in bloom late January and February) and quaint villages before reaching your hotel in Algaida where a swimming pool awaits you.
Enjoy a leisurely ride today as you cycle to the market town of Sineu stopping in small villages on the way for a coffee or snack. Slow your pace right down as you enjoy the unspoiled countryside and glorious surroundings.
Cycling towards the Tramuntana mountains (but not climbing them!), you head towards Moscari and Selva, where you you spend the next two nights in a delightful hotel, based in the centre so ideally located for a promenade in the evenings. The hotel also benefits from a pool so you can enjoy a swim at the end of your cycling days.
Today's circular route from your base of Selva allows an excellent day of cycling through typically Mediterranean landscapes of holm oak woodland, almonds, figs and caper tree groves, one of the most beautiful settings of the island.
Cycle towards the old historic town of Alcudia where there are plenty of options for a leisurely lunch. Head further north to the lovely medieval town of Pollenca where you will spend your final night. Enjoy a meander around the cobble-stone streets and street market, or enjoy dinner alfresco in one of the many charming restaurants.
End in Pollenca, and take a taxi to Palma de Mallorca for your flight home. If you have time before your flight be sure to visit the historic city centre before you leave.
