Nestled just south of Norway's oldest National Park, Rondane, this fantastic resort sits on a sprawling plateau ideal for cross-country skiing at all abilities. Picturesque mountains tower over 2,000m framing the snowy horizon, offering a dramatic backdrop to the breath-taking landscape as you explore the thoughtfully designed network of trails crisscrossing the plateau.
With gentle routes directly from the hotel catering to beginners and families, there are more demanding trails venturing into the rugged wilderness of the National Park for the more confident skier. Try your hand at other winter activities such as dog sledding, snow shoeing, and even mountain curling at the hotels dedicated iced lane.
Established as a summer farm in 1919, the charming Spidsbergseter Hotel is your base whilst in Norway. Over the years, the Spidsberg family has transformed the modest lodgings into a warm, welcoming retreat while preserving much of its original character. Unwind in cosy lounges after a day on the trails or relax in the indoor pool complex to ease any muscle tension. However, the highlight of any stay is the restaurant, renowned for its delectable local cuisine. For a unique experience, you can savour traditional Norwegian spirits in the former goat barn, now an aquavit barn (a Scandinavian distilled spirit).
Arrive at your cosy mountain resort within Norway's Rondane National Park.
You stay at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane.
Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane, Venabygd
On Venabygdsfjellet mountain, the gateway to Rondane National Park, is the traditional Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. Family-run through generations, this charming hotel is known for its distinctive and personal atmosphere, built to give guests memories for life.
With the option to ski in/ski out, you have easy access to over 150km of groomed trails. With an indoor swimming pool open all year round alongside a hot tub and sauna, you can escape the cold and relax in the warm waters with a beautiful view of the snowscape outside.
When it comes to dining, you're spoilt for choice with three on-site restaurants; Utsyn, the largest restaurant with a fantastic mountain view; Rusticity, the newly renovated restaurant with old wood and stone walls; and Nordlys; the Northern Lights restaurant with a glass ceiling and glass walls offering panoramic views of the mountain - perfect for a special occasion!*
*Please note: There may be a supplement on your full board menu to dine at Restaurant Nordlys.
As this is a self-guided holiday, you're free to explore the well-groomed trails at your leisure. The friendly hoteliers are more than happy to provide local guidance on trails, weather, and can also arrange guided cross-country excursions and private ski tuition should you wish to brush up on your skills; for beginners, we recommend two 90 minute private ski tuition sessions.
Fancy a break from cross-country skiing for a day or two? Your hotelier can also arrange guided snow shoeing excursions and dog sledding where you can experience driving your own dog team after having been instructed by an experienced dog handler.
As soon as the freezing temperatures are persistent enough, the resort ice their 'mountain driving' track which is a different, but very fun twist on curling! Inspired by Austria, where 'Eisstockschiessen' is played by over a million people every winter, this is a team competition where you compete to get closest to the red block with their curling stones. Best of 5 rounds wins!
Return to Oslo for extra nights in this lively city or for your flight home.
