TRIP DESCRIPTION

'Every known superstition in the world is gathered into the Carpathians, as if it were the centre of some sort of imaginative whirlpool.' So says the narrator of Dracula, the late 19th century English novel of Victorian superstitions that used this area of Romania to represent something on the edge of civilisation.

A trip to this part of the world is to enter a maelstrom of natural sensation. There is everywhere a bewildering mass of flora and fauna. Profusions of trees and flowers and grasses are barely touched by agricultural exploitation. Be alert, however, for roe deer and chamois and hedgehogs and rodents, plus the sight and sound of the area's 190 bird species. Transylvania is a region full of beauty of every kind, sometimes little towns or castles on the top of steep hills.

This trek rises daily through Carpathian lower reaches, a green land full of forests and woods, with here steep hills crowned with clumps of trees, and there villages newly built in a riot of colour and style. Smile and say Boo Naa (Hello) and you'll meet open-faced strangers who say all the country people show 'hospitality, flexibility, honesty'. The message is that tourists are welcome.

Terrain

You mostly follows tracks and paths through forest and meadows. On most days the walks will start and finish on country roads as you depart and arrive in the villages, these are sometimes tarmacked but more often are gravel.

If you didn't have time when you arrived, it is worth spending a while exploring Brasov before commencing your walk. Leaving the streets of Brasov behind, you enter the forest and ascend up to a more open area of pastures. This provides a nice contrast to the first section of the walk. Easy walking takes you to the high point for the day where you re-enter the forest for a winding descent to Rasnov. The route is generally well way-marked. There is a chance to visit Rasnov castle when you arrive.

Set amidst a lush forest of beech, oak, and chestnut trees, and bordered by a crystal-clear mountain valley, Pensiunea Magura offers the perfect blend of seclusion and modern convenience. Relax on the spacious terrace and enjoy the landscape with a refreshing drink. The onsite restaurant offers traditional Romanian dishes as well as international cuisine.

DAY 6: Magura Circular (8km/5.0mi or 6km/3.7mi)

There are two circular routes today, which can be undertaken as a single, figure-of-eight route, passing your accommodation part way through the day.

The first route provides ample opportunity to see rural life and farming practices whilst enjoying magnificent views of the mountains. You pass caves in limestone cliffs which are home to several bat species. It is essential to take a torch if you wish to go in.

OR

The second option is relatively short but involves a very steep ascent and quite a steep descent, followed by an easy walk back to Magura. You go up and behind the rocky summits visible from your accommodation and it feels quite remote up there. The views are great - you will see your routes to the south and over to Zarnesti to the north and across to Rasnov, as well as the huge ranges of the Craiului and Bucegi mountains.

Good customer service

Ms Downe, 19 Sep 2024

Very well organised. Loved the app ... no chance of getting lost!

A Valued Customer, 14 Sep 2024

We found that the organisation of routes/transport etc, and cost/quality ratio of accommodation/meals was just about perfect for us.

Mr Paulding, 6 Sep 2024

Overall fantastic service; was very impressed with the branded paper holder, with maps, printed itinerary etc. Super quick to respond to questions, and also on the outbound trip dealing with stress/worries caused by being stranded at the airport whilst our plane was delayed hour after hour; making sure the ongoing transport timings were adjusted and we didn't find ourselves stuck at a foreign airport overnight!

Richard Christie, 17 Aug 2024

First walking holiday and it was one of the best experiences of my life Everything went well Great resources - notes and GPX - Good accommodation all spotlessly clean

We benefitted from good weather Walks were challenging which is what you want if you travel that far On dogs we read about issues with strays and shepherd dogs We had no problems - two strays quietly "escorted " us off their patch just walking in front We came across a flock of sheep fortunately with a shepherd who told the dogs to lie still which they did when we passed We met no bears or boars There were bear foot prints on two walks so care is needed - we used whistles and banged tekking poles together and on trees as we walked

People were great

Robert Page, 4 Jul 2024

Headwater organised a very good walking holiday of about the right distance each day. Accommodation was mostly excellent. Headwater supplied both the map App and the route descriptions which you needed to use together to make sure you were going the right way. Unfortunately our transfer from the airport on arrival did not materialise but the local rep was excellent at sorting that out. We found ringing the contact numbers supplied was difficult with UK phones. All we got from Headwater emergency number on a Saturday was a recorded message.

Sally Hope-johnson, 18 May 2024

A wonderful trip in a wonderful country. I would suggest providing gpx files is a must have for this trip (and instructions for new users on how to use gpx files - ie download the free GAIA app)
