TRIP DESCRIPTION

Embark on a serene journey along the Moselle Cycle Path. This leisurely 195-kilometer route from Trier to Koblenz follows the winding course of the Moselle River. Meander through a landscape dotted with medieval castles, picturesque wine villages and romantic Roman towns. Transitioning from the open valleys of the Middle Moselle to the narrow vine covered slopes of the Lower Moselle, you'll ride through remarkable vineyard scenery that beckons you to sample the region's finest vintages and savour the flavours of the Moselle Valley.

Begin your self-guided cycling in Trier, Germany's oldest city, often referred to as the 'Rome of the North'. Home to remarkable Roman relics, including the Porta Nigra city gate and the Roman amphitheatre. The ancient practices of winemaking are still very much alive in the village of Piesport, proudly showcasing the longevity and significance of viticulture in the Moselle Valley. Sure to capture your imagination, is the charming town of Bernkastel-Kues with its colourful half-timbered houses and winding cobblestone streets. Stay two nights in Cochem, with an included wine-tasting and river cruise. The enchanting fairytale castles of Reichsburg and Eltz invite you to discover their storied past. End the trip at Koblenz, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine. Ride along the UNESCO Middle Rhine Valley to the picturesque town of Bacharach and visit the Kaiser Wilhem monument at the Deutches Eck, overlooked by the mighty Ehrenbreitstein fortress.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Arrive in Trier

Arrive in the oldest German city of Trier. Testament to the city's ancient origins are the iconic Roman gate of Porta Nigra and the Roman amphitheatre. After an afternoon exploring the rich Roman heritage, unwind and savour the exquisite flavours of the region's renowned Riesling at one of Trier's traditional wine taverns. Cheers to a memorable cycling adventure!

Day 2: Trier to Piesport (48km/29.8mi)

Cross the historic Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge to start your ride on the left bank of the Moselle. Just outside Trier, you'll pass the Pfalzel district, once the summer residence of Roman emperors. Continue to the charming town of Schweich with its Baroque-style ferry tower. From here, the path ascends into a landscape of terraced vineyards offering you breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Moselle Valley. The river's gentle curves wind through this lush green landscape, an ideal spot to pause and absorb the scenery. Head to Neumagen-Dhron, celebrated as Germany's oldest wine village before arriving Piesport. Here, you can delve into the deep-rooted winemaking traditions that have shaped the region with a visit to a meticulously restored 4th Century wine cellar.

A warm welcome awaits at Piesporter Goldtröpfchen. Named after the world-famous vineyard, it is located in the center of the Moselle town of Piesport. Gernot Hain and his wife Susanne not only look after their guests but create award-winning Moselle wines that have received international recognition. Their family has been running the Hain winery since the 17th century. The hotel also has a small wellness area and a cosy terrace with a direct view of the Moselle. Day 3: Piesport to Traben Trarbach (40km/24.9mi)

Today you should take some time to visit the medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues, its market square is among the most well-preserved in Germany, lined with rows of gabled half-timbered houses. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets, admiring the elegant facades and soaking in the lively atmosphere. Towering over the old town are the ruins of the majestic Landshut Castle. From here, you’ll be rewarded with impressive views of the magnificent Moselle landscape. Following the right bank of the Moselle River through vineyards you’ll reach the village of Zeltigen, known for its grand baroque buildings. Your journey culminates in Traben-Trarbach, an Art Nouveau town with a rich wine trading history, fascinating museums, and the enchanting Grevenburg Castle ruins.

Nestled amidst countless wine slopes, sits the majestic Marienburg castle, boasting a history spanning 1000 years. Perched on the hilltop, the castle offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Pedal along the left bank of the Moselle to the pretty wine-producing village Bremm. Located on one of the most beautiful loops of the river and sitting at the foot of Europe's steepest vineyard, its winding cobbled streets and half-timbered houses make for a perfect spot to soak in the idyllic surroundings of the Moselle Valley before continuing to Cochem. With its charming market square, impressive Reichsburg castle and lively promenade, this old town on the Lower Mosel invites exploration.

Day 5: At Cochem

Take an included river cruise down the Moselle and admire the impressive wine cultivation landscape of the 'Moselkrampen' gliding past the imposing Reichsburg castle on your return to Cochem.

Explore the castle's towering ramparts and fortified walls and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of this iconic landmark. Stroll along the promenade or through the winding streets of the old town with its half-timbered houses, baroque town hall and cozy cafes.

Day 6: Cochem to Koblenz (49km/30.4mi)

Leaving Cochem you’ll soon arrive in the village of Moselkern. From there, a short detour beckons to the nearby fairytale-like Eltz Castle. With its unique location in the heart of the Eltz Forest this stunning medieval fortress is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Germany. Take your time exploring the historic village of Kobern-Gondorf, peppered with interesting architecture including a medieval marketplace and a Romanesque bell tower keeping solitary watch out in the vineyards. Pedal through the Terrassenmosel (Terrace Moselle) region, which owes its name to the steep slopes where vines grow on narrow terraces. Making your way towards Winningen, its welcoming wineries are perfect for a stop before the final stretch to Koblenz. On arrival in Koblenz, take a ride on the included cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Situated on a rocky outcrop, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city and beyond.

Day 7: At Koblenz (50km/31.1mi)

Today you have a choice of activities. Enjoy a delightful day of cycling with a ride along the UNESCO Middle Rhine Valley to the picturesque town of Bacharach, with its rolling vineyards, medieval castles and charming villages. Upon arriving in Bacharach, you can explore its historic streets, visit the impressive Stahleck Castle and relax by the river, returning to Koblenz by train. Alternatively, have a leisurely day exploring Koblenz, with its inviting winding lanes, little squares, numerous churches and museums. Visit the iconic Deutsches Eck (German Corner), at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine. In this city on two rivers your cycling adventure along the Moselle comes to an end.
