The Lakes Route takes you on a journey through the enchanting Alpine landscapes of Switzerland. Connecting its iconic lakes, from Lake Geneva to Lake Lucerne, it offers picture-postcard Switzerland with breathtaking views across mirror-like lakes surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and Pre-Alps.
Ascend from the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva to savour the rich flavours of Gruyere cheese and immerse yourself in the Alpine farming traditions of Saanenland. Explore the contrasting charms of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz before crossing the Brunig Pass with stunning lake vistas surrounded by the iconic Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau peaks. Beyond, lies the sprawling Lake Lucerne and the vibrant city of Lucerne, heart of Central Switzerland.
The route is predominantly flat as it winds along the numerous lakes, but there are some smaller and larger inclines to navigate between them. Less experienced cyclists may find an electric bike particularly well-suited to this route. For more active cyclists, touring bikes are a great option, with the flexibility to shorten stages using public transport if needed.
Arrive in Vevey, embodying the essence of Swiss Riviera elegance with its stunning lakeside promenade and views of the French Alps.

From Vevey, you take the rack railway (payable locally) to Mont-Pelerin. Continue via the Pays-d'Enhaut a region rich in heritage and gastronomy, passing Chateau-d'Oex, a hot-air ballooning metropolis and Rougemont known for its well-preserved wooden chalets. Arrive in the world-renowned resort of Gstaad.

Today's ride through the Simmental Valley is accompanied by the Simme River. Set against the stunning Bernese Alps, towering peaks like Albristhorn and Lotschberg create a breathtaking backdrop. The route from Gstaad ascends, with a series of ups and downs to reach the shores of Lake Thun. As you ride, you'll be treated to a Swiss fairytale landscape of majestic mountains and charming chalets, all set amidst vibrant green meadows and the iconic Simmental cattle.

Start your day with a boat ride across crystal-clear Lake Thun to Interlaken, gateway to the Jungfrau region. Cycle through forest to the delightful Giessbach Falls*, cascading 400m over 14 steps. Nearby, the elegant Grand Hotel Giessbach and Europe's oldest funicular, built in 1879, offer a touch of history. The trail descends to Lake Brienz before an easy ride up the valley to Meiringen, home to the impressive Aare Gorge.
*Please note that due to a narrow forest trail it will be necessary to push your bike a short distance near the Giessbach Falls.

Fuelled by a meringue or two, you'll take the cable car from Meiringen to Hasliberg-Reuti (payable locally). Ascend the hairpin bends of the Brunig Pass, connecting the Bernese Oberland with central Switzerland. Your efforts are rewarded at the top with stunning views of the Wetterhorn and surrounding peaks. A swift and scenic descent takes you to azure water of Lake Lugern. Passing Dundelbach Falls and the Lungern-Turren cableway, a leisurely ride following Lake Lungern brings you to today's destination, the quiet village of Giswil.
