TRIP DESCRIPTION

The exquisite Dalmatian Islands lie just off the Croatian coastline, resting atop the inviting waters of the Mediterranean Sea. These unique islands offer those who visit a diverse experience with pockets of discovery to relish in, whilst the coastal air supplies a fresh breeze to compliment the blissful Croatian sun, perfect for walking! We feature the islands of Brač and Hvar, renowned for their relaxed ambience, fantastic local cuisine and wine, intriguing historic cities and towns, and some of the most scenically dramatic walking in Europe. These Dalmatian Islands are the picture-perfect destination for a keen walker searching for spectacular natural beauty.

Your journey begins in the exuberant city of Split, known for mastering the ideal balance between tradition and modernity. Founded by the Romans, Split's famous UNESCO Diocletian's Palace was once the Emperor's retirement home. Today its warren of narrow alleys houses the town's cathedral, while its cavernous cellars are used as art galleries. A scenic ferry journey brings you to your first Dalmatian Island, Brač encompassing an extensive and fascinating history which provides an excellent window into authentic Croatian Island life.

Another beautiful ferry crossing brings you to your second Dalmatian Island, Hvar, where vast vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields are abundant. There are copious amounts of interesting museums, castles and Roman remains to explore on your journey as well as many swimming opportunities in the incredible clear blue sea. The last of your ferry rides brings you back to Split where you may wish to add extra nights to truly appreciate the culture and architecture of this exciting city, where enticing fresh seafood and local wines can be found around every corner.

We have included three nights in Split and four nights in Hvar, allowing plenty of time to explore the history and nature at your own pace.

Terrain

The route is mostly along tracks or rural roads; sometimes on paths (some can be rocky due to characteristic limestone). Paths are generally easy to follow and sometimes waymarked and/or signposted however this is variable.

Nestled in the heart of Hvar's historic old town, Hotel Villa Nora is housed in a beautifully restored 14th-century palace that once belonged to the aristocratic Gazzari family. This elegant and refined hotel, one of the most beautiful in Dalmatia, offers a blend of modern luxury and historical charm.

The spacious rooms are stylishly furnished, equipped with air conditioning, minibars, and satellite TV, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing stay. Villa Nora's prime location puts guests within walking distance of the island’s vibrant nightlife, including restaurants, discotheques, a casino, and a night club. Day 4 Sveti Klement Island (7km/4.3mi)

Take a water taxi (payable locally) to the largest of the Pakleni islands, Sveti Klement and follow a shady, rocky path to the hamlet of Vlaka. There are plenty of coves and beaches to stop at today before taking the water taxi back to Hvar.

Day 5 Malo Grablje (16km/9.9mi)

Today your walk takes you through the hills where you will see olive groves and lavender fields to the abandoned village of Malo Grablje. The route back down takes you to Milna, on the coast, where you can stop for a swim before following an inland route through vineyards back to Hvar town.

Day 6 Stari Grad (13km/8.1mi)

Take the bus to Stari Grad to enjoy a circular walk of two halves. Firstly, you walk through olive groves, vineyards and villages in the hills south of the plain, and secondly through the famous cultivated land on the Stari Grad plain. This area was laid out by the Greeks in the 4th century BC and has been in continuous use for growing olives and vines ever since. Interpretive panels along the way provide information. If possible, we suggest you allow yourself some time to explore Stari Grad, which translates as 'Old City' before taking the bus back to Hvar town.

Day 7 At Split (9km/5.6mi)

Take the morning ferry back to Split, spend time exploring the city and visiting the Diocletian Palace, and take a walk around Marjan Park, a wooded headland with magnificent views.

REVIEWS

The booking process and information given beforehand was really clear. The holiday itself was very well planned and the walking instructions were detailed and easy to follow. The accommodation was excellent and well-located. We had a fabulous time and felt really relaxed throughout, knowing that all the hard work parts of organising a holiday were done for us.

Mrs Swainland, 25 Oct 2024

We've travelled with Headwater for many years. Consistently excellent service, great choices of hotels and all of the details sorted.

A Valued Customer, 15 Oct 2024

Mrs Henderson, 4 Oct 2024

Very good experience, as before. All staff with whom I had dealings (both in UK and Croatia) were helpful, attentive to any needs, polite and friendly.

Marion Sugars, 15 Aug 2024

Enjoyable holiday but extreme heat prevented us from walking as much as we would have liked.

Simon Yates, 4 Jul 2024

A truly great walking holiday, our fourth with Headwater. Hotels in fab locations, excellent food, challenging walking and incredible scenery. We loved it.

Gillian Whittingham, 23 May 2024

Advance preparatory information was clear. Management of an itinerary change, due to unforeseen circumstances whilst on holiday was well managed and communicated with us clearly.

Sheena Millar, 20 Oct 2023

Highly recommended walking holiday to Split and Dalmatian Islands. We chose to do some of the shorter walks suggested to keep near the sea as it was very hot, so every walk also included a swim. Great accommodation with v friendly hosts.
